Xtreme Skate

Xtreme Skate is a brutal 2D skateboarding platformer.

The game requires players to gain mastery over the skateboard, perfecting skills, grinds and landings to achieve higher scores and higher speeds.

Technical Design

  • Built a prototype in Unreal Engine 4 with a full showcase of the core gameplay loop.

    • Using blueprints I built mechanics for grinding, manuals, timing based landings when jumping, a momentum system to add and reduce speed of the player character based on their skill and a scoring system.

    • Additionally, reactive UI, animations and sound have been implemented to enhance the game feel.

  • The prototype can be played on both keyboard and controller.

Game Design

  • Designed a set of player mechanics and abilities inspired by Skateboarding games and Platformers.

    • The core gameplay was designed to be difficult to learn but satisfying to master with an emphasis on high scores achieved by chaining combos and high skill, adding replayability.

  • Designed tutorials and levels to allow people to learn the mechanics as they play.

    • Due to the mechanics being quite difficult to learn for newcomers to this style of game it required testers playing the game and learning its systems for 30 minutes to an hour. This was important to see how their skills progressed and what they might need help with in tutorial segments.

  • Designed 2 Main Levels and 5 Tutorial Levels.

    • The Tutorial Levels taught players the Basic and Advanced mechanics of the game.

    • The Main Levels that are designed for players of differing skill with the mechanics, showcasing the way the game can progress in difficulty.

  • Blocked-out, Meshed and Lit the level in-engine.

Sound & Visuals

  • Created music for the game to fit the overall aesthetic.

  • Created UI art for the game to enhance the game feel and user experience.

  • Created unique materials to enhance the games visuals by syncing emissive glow to the music, alongside using mesh assets sourced here.
