The Topping Who Tried

A collaborative project made for Ukie’s #RaiseTheGameJam. For the theme “Diversity & Inclusivity” we decided to create a light-hearted platformer focused on reframing real world bigotry as various pizza toppings oppressing the worlds most controversial topping choice, Pineapple.

The game is a 2D platformer where the player, playing as a pineapple chunk must avoid enemy toppings and reach the pizza to end the level.

Collaborative

This was my 2nd Games Jam project, and also the shortest collaborative project I have participated in (36 hours). Games jams have been very good learning experiences, and they have helped me formulate an improved and fluid workflow, as well as improve my team management and communication skills.

UI & 2D Art

Due to the rest of the team not knowing about 2D asset development or UI implementation in UE4, I gladly filled these roles. As the theme was hard to translate through the gameplay alone, we decided it was best to create some form of opening cutscene. As we had no animators, I took the task of making a 2D slideshow style introductory sequence. I created the cutscene from storyboards to final piece.

Games Design

While most of my work in-engine was focused on UI implementation and Menus, I also gave input in design discussion and helped making game modes and tweaking gameplay elements.
