Games Design

  • Designed a Hack’n’Slash combat system inspired by Devil May Cry 5 and PlatinumGames’ titles such as Metal Gear Rising Revengence and Bayonetta.

  • Developed a core concept of the game to build the combat system around.

    • The player builds up a charge bar on hitting enemies, encouraging aggressive play.

    • At certain stages of charge the player will gain additional passives both positive (chain lightning on hit) and negative (receiving more damage).

    • Players can opt to exchange tiers of charge to perform different special attacks like a Laser or spinning Whirlwind.

Technical Design

  • Built a prototype for the game in Unreal Engine 5, which involved scripting (with Blueprints) the following:

    • A freeform lock-on system that allows players full camera control while locking the character to enemies.

    • A functioning and easily-editable combo system allowing for a huge variety of potential combos.

    • Air and ground combat including:

      • Launches to bring enemies into the air,

      • Attacks that push characters away or throw them down to the ground.

      • Hack’n’Slash staples like “stingers”.

    • A Chain Lightning Effect spreading damage to nearby enemies (required the creation of a custom Niagara particle).

    • A complex animation blueprint for the main character to improve game feel. Additionally, the prototype currently includes dummies that react to damage and being launched with an animation blueprint of their own.

    • Three unique special attacks with a dynamic camera system.

Sound & UI

  • Designed and created artwork for UI.

    • The UI also changes based on whether the player is using Keyboard & Mouse or Gamepad inputs.

  • Sourced, edited and created sound effects to enhance the game feel.
